Two stories we never saw coming. You can change how they end.
The gorgeous face above belongs to Cunningham, who was found roaming a local neighborhood before a kind resident brought the beautiful orange fluff ball into her home - and was immediately smitten. Cunningham is affectionate, gentle, and completely at ease with people… an instant love bug.
Being a stray, there were plenty of unknowns, so Cunningham’s rescuer reached out to us for help with the stray “male” orange tabby. At intake we uncovered a heart murmur and Cunningham’s first surprise: “he” was not a “he” at all. Orange female cats are fairly uncommon, and our team shared a quick laugh at the mix up as we welcomed our unexpected new resident.
Soon after, Cunningham was scheduled for an echocardiogram - which brought a second welcome surprise. There was no heart murmur at all. We were relieved, knowing she wouldn’t carry a “special needs” label into adoption. Then came a final twist. Cunningham wasn’t just female—she was pregnant. Instead of routine care, she headed to foster to settle in and prepare. At the end of March, she gave birth to three tiny, perfect kittens—each one black with little specks of orange, like they borrowed just a bit of their mother’s beautiful coloring.
At the same time Cunningham headed to foster, a young puppy named Lohara was beginning a more uncertain journey. What started as a routine intake quickly changed when concerning symptoms cropped up. Lohara needed immediate, intensive care. Each day was closely monitored and filled with small but meaningful milestones. Behind the scenes, staff shared optimistic notes on her recovery:
“Showing interest in toys, ate a little food… will sit for fluids very well in your lap.”
“Wagging her tail and being a bit sassy. Yay!”
“Came in to a wagging tail and empty bowls!”
Each small update tells the story of a puppy fighting her way back and a team cheering her on. Today Lohara is playful, resilient, and ready for her new life - one she has because of the care she received.
These two animals faced two very different journeys. One life changed in an instant with an unexpected new beginning. One life changed day by day, through dedicated care. Every day at Cape Ann Animal Aid, animals arrive with stories we could never predict. Some need a safe place to bring new life into the world. Others need time, treatment, and a team who won’t give up on them.
Give today to ensure unexpected stories like Cunningham’s and Lohara’s still lead to happy endings.
