Visiting the Shelter
We happily allow casual visitors to our cat and dog areas, and have the following policies:
- Please limit your visit to 20 minutes and we kindly ask you to visit one species only. We limit the number of visitors in adoption areas to reduce stress on our shelter animals and to allow staff to give you their full attention, so you may experience a wait at busy times. You are welcome to come back to visit another day!
- Visitors are not allowed to open any animal enclosures or remove animals from their housing.
- All animals have a cage card which gives you basic information about the pet including: name, age, arrival date, possible breed mix and if they are currently available for adoption.
- Speak softly and turn your body slightly to the side when approaching a shelter pet's enclosure to help reduce the pet’s feelings of anxiety over having new people in front of their enclosures.
- Do not reach fingers into enclosures. To solicit attention, you may place a flat palm against caging.
- Be mindful of restricted or staff only areas, including the back play yards.
- Children and minors should be under adult supervision at all times.
Planning to adopt during your visit?
Our full adoption process and policies are available on our adoption page. Important things to note:
- We encourage you to consider browsing our available animals and submitting your adoption application online ahead of your visit!
- capeannanimalaid.org/cats OR capeannanimalaid.org/dogs
- Please only submit an application for the animal you are interested in meeting and taking home today. If the connection isn't the right one, our adoption team is happy to work with you to find a match.
- Already applied? Great! Once in our adoption areas, our adoption staff can check on the status of your application.
- Adoptions cannot be completed if started less than 30 minutes before closing
- Visitors are not allowed to remove animals from their housing or open kennel doors, and are only able to meet one on one with an animal once approved to adopt
- Prepare to have the following available for your application:
- Contact name and numbers for your landlord (if renting) and a minimum of 3 personal references.
- Call your vet (if you currently have other pets) to give permission to discuss your pet(s) vaccine history with us, or have paper/digital copies of vaccination history available with you.
- Interested in a foster pet? If the pet you are interested in adopting has “foster” in their name, they are in a foster home and are not at the shelter. Once your application is approved, we will coordinate with you and the foster home for either a virtual meeting or an in person meeting at the shelter.
Please note that due to staffing limitations, our general voicemail box and email inbox are not monitored as closely as they are under normal circumstances. Many questions can be answered by the pages on our website. If you have a question, please check our website for answers before calling or emailing. Thank you for your patience!

Interested In Adopting an Animal?
Due to a high volume of interest, we are unable to answer questions about available animals via email, and we are not always able to return calls immediately. As adoptions are completed on a first come, first serve basis, your best bet is to fill out an online application for an animal you are interested in. You will have the opportunity to meet the animal over video call or in person to determine if the animal is a good fit.
